This half-day workshop for new coordinators and community partners focuses on providing background information that will enable those working in the Ontario Heart Health Program to work effectively in their community coalitions. After participating in this three-hour workshop, you will know more about the:
- Structure and history of the Ontario Heart Health Program (OHHP - Taking Action for Healthy Living);
- Services of the Heart Health Resource Centre (HHRC) and how to access them;
- Planning and evaluating the quality of your health promotion programs; and
- OHHP administrative requirements of the Ministry of Health Promotion (MHP).

Health Equity: Are We There Yet?
Examining the social determinants of health through the chronic disease prevention lens.

For serveral years, health agencies, health educators and governments, have acknowledged the impact of social disparities on the health of individuals and specific populations. The new Ontario Public Health Standards make specific reference to address the needs of disenfranchised groups in program planning and delivery. The full day symposium is intended for OHHP-Taking Action for Healthy Living Coordinators, community partners, NGO's, Ministry of Health Promotion Staff and other health promotion professionals. Planning is underway to develop an exciting agenda that will enable you to:
- Relate the social determinants of health to the challenges you face in developing and delivering effective health promotion programs;
- Recognize how the new Ontario Public Health Standards acknowledge the issues of health equity;
- Identify how the OHPRS might assist you in incorporating social determinants of health into your programs;
- Identify how other similar organizations are addressing the social determinants of health in their health promotion programs.

Influencing Decision-makers

This interactive workshop will help you to develop the skills necessary to influence decision-makers in a variety of situations. The speakers have extensive experience in influencing policy-makers at provincial and local levels. You will learn how to advocate for policy changes, influence new community contacts and maximize the role of volunteers in your campaigns. By the end of the day, you will be well on your way to developing the key components of your own advocacy strategies.
