Partnerships and Coalitions

Many terms are used to describe a partnership, including network, co-operation, alliance, coalition and collaboration. Researchers use different words with the same board definition.

Community partnership for our purposes, consistent with resources produced by the HHRC, is meant to convey the most generic term possible for the group of organizational members and volunteers who come together to participate in the local OHHP – Taking action for Healthy Living project (OHHP – Taking Action for Healthy Living Reference Material, Glossary of Terms, Dec. 2003).

A partnership is an alliance among two or more parties that pursue a ser of agreed upon goals, Partnership building often involves negotiation among the different partners in the definition of goals and ethical ground rules, joint action areas, and agreement on the form of cooperation reflected in the partnership (Adapted from the World Health Organization, 1998 in, An Overview of the Ontario Chronic Disease Prevention Alliance, Jan 2004).

A coalition is a structured arrangement for coordination, cooperation, and collaboration between otherwise unrelated groups or organizations, in which each group retains its identity but all agree to work together toward common mutually agreed upon gaols (Heart Health Sustainability Workbook for Action, 1999).

The Heart Health Resource Centre offers a number of publications and resources that will help in your efforts to build strong partnerships and coalitions.
